FAQs for NISRA Data Portal

I used NINIS to look at statistics for Northern Ireland. What do I use now?

NINIS is no longer available. The NINIS Redirect Page is available to ensure that, as far as possible, users will continue to have access to the information previously on NINIS. This page sets out these arrangements and includes interactive lookup tables that provide links to the new location or contact details.

Are there guidance materials for use with the Data Portal?

Yes, there is a User guide that gives a step-by-step guide to searching for data, manipulating/customising the tables, as well as charting and mapping the data. The manual also includes some worked examples.

A short video demonstrating use of the tables, charts and interactive maps in the Data Portal is also available.

Do you provide training on how to use the Data Portal?

NISRA are running online training sessions on how to use the Data Portal, please contact to register your interest.

Do you have data on x?

The quickest way to find out if data is available is to go the NISRA Data Portal and use the browse facility to explore the themes and subthemes available on the system. Alternatively, you can use the Search function to find tables associated with a particular area of interest. Each table also contains contact details for the branch responsible for uploading the data. Alternatively you can email .

I think there is an error in the data, what should I do?

Please contact us at highlighting the specific table and the suspected error. We will then respond as appropriate.

I used to use the mapping element in NINIS to find out which geographical level postcodes belonged to, how can I find this out now?

Users can now use the NISRA Boundary Application. It is an interactive map created by Ordnance Survey of Northern Ireland (OSNI). It can be used to display the boundaries of different geographies as well as postcode locations. When searching by postcode, the address locator tool marks on the map a property with that postcode. The location of a postcode in the Central Postcode Directory (CPD) layer is the property closest to the average location of all properties in that postcode. Therefore, the location of some postcodes can differ slightly between the address locator and the CPD.
